Background 
Garden Organic is the UK’s leading organic growing charity. We’re a membership organisation, with 23,000 members. For over 60 years we’ve been researching and promoting organic growing to get as many people as possible to grow and tend private, public and community gardens/green spaces the organic way.   

The overall purpose of the role
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Business Development Manager to help us engage local authorities, housing associations, and other commissioning organisations to use green spaces to maximum advantage. We have a range of services that support land management in harmony with nature, local food growing and gardening initiatives, community engagement and the health and well-being of individuals. You will be experienced in identifying, creating and nurturing high-value strategic partnerships mostly in the public sector. You will be comfortable with networking, tendering, and contract negotiation. A team player, you’ll have a sharp commercial mind and proven track record in bringing in contract work within the public sector and/or the housing sector. Winning contracts in a charity setting require liaison and creative thinking along with those in charge of other income streams, project delivery and overall charity finance. 

Our work, delivered by both staff and volunteers, includes:

  • Demonstrating organic horticulture 
  • Composting and waste recycling 
  • Expert training courses online and in-person 
  • Citizen science experiments 
  • Conserving rare seed varieties 
  • Growing our membership base 
  • Installing community gardens
  • Campaigning, eg against the use of pesticides and peat

Our ambition
The team is now engaged in identifying additional and new areas of opportunity, where organic methods represent excellent value for money for those looking for long term, sustainable outcomes. We want to secure work from commissioners in the areas of natural recovery, volunteering, tree planting, increasing biodiversity and protecting pollinators as well as the social and health benefits of community gardening. We want to champion organic methods as a key part of meeting an organisation’s key environmental and sustainability objectives. We want to increase inclusivity and promote diversity so that organic growing and land management becomes the norm for people from all backgrounds all over the UK. 
 
This role will be at the forefront of this step-change for Garden Organic. 

Responsibilities & Main Duties

  • Working with the Director of Horticultural Engagement, build on our raft of contracts with local authorities and housing associations in order to scale up our charitable delivery. 
  • Analyse, develop, manage and report on our pipeline of opportunities, with associated income budget, to include actual and forecasted income. 
  • Research and identify new clients and opportunities in the public and third sector which can diversify our income and increase our organisation’s impact.
  • Identify the objectives of our clients and respond with suitable proposals and pricing propositions. 
  • Work collaboratively with our delivery/operational teams to negotiate optimum client contracts.
  • Manage all registrations with government tendering websites and those of outsourcing agencies.
  • Undertake work pertaining to invitations to tender, pre-qualification questionnaires and all other requirements in order to bid as a subcontractor on relevant government/third sector frameworks.
  • Be the face of our contract negotiation in the public sector, third sector and housing associations by attending networking events, and client meetings alongside the Horticultural Engagement. Director, CEO and other colleagues responsible for income generation.
  • Work with the wider charity to take part in horizon scanning and market intel to inform the annual business plan and three-year strategy. 

It is the nature of the work of Garden Organic that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All employees are expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises where tasks are not specifically covered in the Job Description and have to be undertaken. Occasional evening, weekend and bank holiday working will be required. A valid UK driving license would be useful, but not essential.
